How Often Should I Update My Estate Plan?

An estate plan is not a "set it and forget it" document. Life changes, and your estate plan should change with it. Here are some guidelines on when to review and update your estate plan:

  1. Review annually: It's a good practice to review your estate plan every year, even if you don't make changes. This helps ensure everything is still aligned with your wishes.

  2. Major life events: Certain life events should trigger an immediate review of your estate plan:

    • Marriage or divorce

    • Birth or adoption of a child

    • Death of a spouse or child

    • Significant changes in financial situation

    • Moving to a different state

    • Changes in tax laws

  3. Every 3-5 years: Even without major life changes, it's wise to have your estate plan professionally reviewed every 3-5 years. Laws change, and what was optimal a few years ago may no longer be the best approach.

  4. Key areas to review:

    • Beneficiary designations

    • Guardianship appointments for minor children

    • Executor and trustee appointments

    • Powers of attorney

    • Asset inventory

Remember, an outdated estate plan can be almost as problematic as having no estate plan at all. Regular reviews and updates ensure your estate plan continues to reflect your current wishes and circumstances.
